Therapy Basics
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No referral is required to book an appointment. However, some insurance providers may request one for reimbursement. Please check your plan details to confirm.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
Therapy can benefit anyone seeking clarity, healing, or support, whether you’re working through trauma, grief, anxiety, burnout, or simply feeling stuck. You don’t need to have a diagnosis to start. If you’re curious or unsure, a consultation can help determine if this is the right time or fit for you.
What can I expect in my first session?
The first session is about getting to know you. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, your goals, and what support you’re hoping for. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions and get a feel for how I work. There’s no pressure to share everything all at once—we go at your pace.
What if I start therapy and it doesn’t feel like a good fit?
Therapy is most effective when there’s a good connection between you and your therapist. If at any point you feel the fit isn’t right, I absolutely support you in finding someone who’s a better match and can help connect you with another trusted provider.
Do you work with children, teens, or couples?
At this time, I work exclusively with adult individuals, with a focus on trauma, burnout, grief, and emotional wellness. If you’re looking for support for a child, teen, or couple, I’m happy to offer referrals to trusted colleagues in your area.
Do you offer coaching instead of therapy?
While I don’t label my work as “coaching,” many clients seek out therapy for the same goal-oriented reasons: to gain clarity, develop tools, and move forward. With therapy, you benefit from the same future-focused support backed by ethical standards, regulated training, and psychological science.
Appointments, Booking & Fees
How do I book an appointment?
You can book by:
- Using the online booking system
- Calling the office
- Sending us an email
If you have specific scheduling needs, just let us know—we’re happy to help.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes. I offer secure, confidential virtual sessions for residents of Alberta, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Online therapy is a flexible, effective option for clients who prefer to attend from the comfort of home or cannot make it to the office in person.
What is your cancellation policy?
We require 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. Missed appointments or late cancellations may be subject to a cancellation fee, as that time has been reserved just for you.
How much do your services cost?
- Standard 50-minute session: $235
- EMDR Intensives: Custom pricing based on format (half-day, weekday, or weekend). Rates reflect session time, preparation, post-treatment debriefs, and optional personalized workbooks. Learn more about EMDR Intensives.
Fees are in alignment with the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta’s recommended fee schedule.
How do I pay?
To honour your time and commitment, payment is arranged prior to sessions. I accept:
- E-transfer
- Credit card (including pre-authorized options)
- Cash (for in-person sessions)
I offer direct billing to many extended health insurance providers, including:
- Alberta Blue Cross
- ASEBP
- Green Shield

- Medavie
Please check your coverage directly with your insurance provider.
I also offer financing for EMDR Intensives through Medicard, which allows you to pay in monthly installments if needed.
Can I use therapy receipts for tax purposes?
Yes. Therapy services provided by a registered psychologist are often eligible as a medical expense on your tax return in Canada. Be sure to keep your receipts, and consult with your accountant or CRA for more details.
Psychology, Coaching & Confidentiality
What’s the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist?
In Canada, “counsellor” is an unregulated title, meaning anyone can use it regardless of their training. In contrast, psychologists are licensed health professionals, trained and regulated to provide evidence-based care.
As a psychologist, I have:
- A Master’s degree in psychology
- At least one year of supervised clinical experience
- Ongoing regulation by the College of Alberta Psychologists
- Coverage through most extended health benefit plans
- Specialized training in trauma, EMDR, assessment, and treatment
Additionally, for Alberta residents, I can refer clients to a psychiatrist when needed for medication consultation or more specialized psychiatric care.
What if we know the same people or live in the same community?
Living in a smaller city means we may cross paths online or in person. While I can’t be your friend on social media or outside of therapy, I take your privacy seriously.
If we discover mutual connections or overlapping relationships, I will consult with a colleague and assess for any conflict. If appropriate, we’ll talk openly in session about your comfort level and preferences. If a conflict exists, I will support a smooth transition to another trusted therapist.
Do you write reports for court or legal purposes?
I do not provide legal, WCB, or custody-related assessments or reports. My focus is on therapeutic work and healing. If you need documentation for legal purposes, I’m happy to refer you to a professional with the appropriate qualifications and scope of practice.
Therapy Methods & EMDR
What is the difference between EMDR and talk therapy?
Talk therapy helps you explore thoughts, emotions, and patterns through discussion and insight. EMDR goes deeper by helping your brain reprocess distressing experiences using bilateral stimulation. You don’t have to talk in detail about your trauma for EMDR to work because it allows your nervous system to complete unfinished processing in a more embodied way.
What is Measurement-Based Care and how is it used in your practice?
I use Measurement-Based Care (MBC) through the secure Greenspace Health platform. This involves short, evidence-based check-ins you’ll complete online to track your symptoms, goals, and progress over time.
MBC helps us:
- Monitor your progress more effectively
- Tailor treatment to your evolving needs
- Increase collaboration between us
- Catch plateaus or concerns early
This process is simple, confidential, and fully integrated into our work together so you can see and feel your growth.
What actually makes therapy effective?
While modalities like EMDR or CBT are powerful, research shows that what matters most is the relationship between you and your therapist.
This is reflected in the Common Factors Theory, which identifies four key ingredients in successful therapy:
- A strong therapeutic relationship built on trust and respect
- Your own motivation and strengths
- A shared sense of hope and expectancy
- The use of evidence-based techniques
In other words, therapy works best when we’re working together—with intention, compassion, and alignment.
Yoga Therapy & Complementary Care
How does yoga therapy support trauma recovery?
Yoga therapy offers a body-based complement to talk therapy, helping you reconnect with your physical self in a safe, empowering way. Breathwork, mindful movement, and grounding techniques help release stored tension and support nervous system regulation.
Do I need to be experienced in yoga?
Not at all. Trauma-informed yoga therapy is accessible, gentle, and adapted to your needs with no prior experience required.
How do yoga therapy and EMDR work together?
Yoga therapy supports the resourcing and integration phases of EMDR. It can also help regulate your nervous system between sessions, enhancing your body’s ability to process and heal.
Professional Consultations
Who is consultation for?
Consultation is for therapists, psychologists, social workers, and helping professionals seeking clinical guidance, skill development, burnout recovery support, and sustainable practice strategies.
Do you provide EMDRIA consultation hours?
Yes. I offer consultation toward EMDRIA certification, including case conceptualization, protocol guidance, and clinical skill refinement.
What areas do you specialize in for consultation?
My consultation focuses on complex trauma, dissociation, burnout and moral injury, trauma-informed practice, and values-driven private practice development.
Is consultation individual or group-based?
Both options are available. Individual consultation offers personalized clinical support, while group consultation provides peer learning, case discussion, and shared growth.
Can consultation help with burnout and professional confidence?
Yes. Many clinicians seek consultation not only for technical skills but also to restore clarity, confidence, and sustainability in their work.
